Don’t Grow Weary
By Mando Matthews
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Galations 6:9
“When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” 5. Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets [again].” 6. When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.” Luke 5:4-7 NIV
Many Christians who experience disappointment while “fishing for men” often become disillusioned, lose heart, and give up on reaching the lost altogether because of past “failed” experiences. In Luke 5, Peter and his friends had worked super hard all night to catch fish with no success. After a long night with no success, one can imagine how dejected and tired they must have felt. An all-nighter with nothing to show for it! In this contect, Jesus comes up to them with a fresh idea, “Let’s go fishing again!”
I can only imagine Peter’s thought process. If the fish weren’t biting before, what would make it any different this time around? Regardless, he obeyed the voice of Jesus and went for it again. This time the results were stunning!! They caught so many fish that it required great unity from the other partners and boats to haul in the catch!
Often, past disappointments with outreach can hinder us from obeying Jesus in the present. I remember the first time God spoke to me to hold a tent revival. Over 20 years ago when I was about 19 years old,I was helping my dad, who was pastoring a small church plant in Gardena, CA. I worked hard to secure an empty parking lot of a strip club in our city and we put a tent up for 3-5 days. We invited out the entire neighborhood! Sadly very few unbelievers came. Over the course of the tent revival, only 1 person came to Christ. Considering the amount of time, energy and effort spent on the tent and event, we could have felt disillusioned and tempted to never “cast our nets out again” after this… Was it worth it?
First, the Bible says that all of Heaven rejoices (throws a party!!!) over one soul that is saved. Sometimes our perspective regarding the value of even one soul is skewed! Secondly, when following Jesus, each step of obedience will lead to great harvest, if we don’t quit. I believe our faithfulness to obey even with small results, has led to obedience in the large scale with tents all over California, where hundreds, even thousands are being saved, healed, and set free!
To the Church of California, I believe Jesus is saying, cast our nets out again! I believe we have entered a new season in California for a Great Harvest. Past seasons of disappointment will be forgotten as we cast our nets out again. I believe we will see the greatest harvest in the history of California!
Jesus, we ask that you would reignite and relight the lamp that once burned bright in our hearts. Heal the disillusioned believer in California. Refresh the weary. Reawaken and resend us back into your harvest fields! We declare the harvest is plentiful, and we will be willing and joyful laborers of love in your harvest!
